Common questions

What qualifications do I need for a nuclear decommissioning job?

Most technician and operator roles ask for a relevant Level 3 qualification (mechanical, electrical, process or laboratory) plus site-based radiological training, which employers usually provide. Engineering and safety case roles normally want a degree or HND in a science or engineering discipline with demonstrable nuclear or heavily-regulated experience.

Do decommissioning jobs need security clearance?

BPSS is the baseline for site access. Roles touching sensitive material, security systems or defence-adjacent work will typically require SC, and a small number require DV. Clearance is sponsored by the employer once you have an offer.

How long does decommissioning work last?

Sellafield's mission is funded and planned over decades, so decommissioning is the most stable long-term work in the Cumbrian nuclear cluster — both for permanent staff and for contractors on rolling supply chain assignments.
