Nuclear & engineering apprenticeships in Cumbria

From Level 2 site trades to degree apprenticeships in engineering — train with the employers building submarines at Barrow and decommissioning Sellafield.

17 live apprenticeship and early-careers vacancies today

Earn while you learn

Apprentices are paid from day one, with college or university fees covered by the employer. Cumbrian nuclear apprentice pay typically starts above the national apprentice minimum because employers compete for the same intake.

A 20-year pipeline

Sellafield's decommissioning mission and the submarine build programme at Barrow both run for decades, so apprenticeships here lead to long-term local careers rather than short contracts.

Routes to chartership

Degree apprenticeships lead to BEng qualifications and professional registration with the IMechE, IET or Nuclear Institute, without student debt.

Apprenticeship routes into the Cumbrian nuclear sector

Site trades and craft apprenticeships (Level 2–3)

Welding and fabrication, pipefitting, mechanical fitting, electrical installation, instrumentation, scaffolding and plant maintenance. Usually a mix of block-release college study and supervised time on site.

Technician apprenticeships (Level 3–4)

Maintenance technician, control and instrumentation, quality and inspection, radiation monitoring and laboratory technician routes. Common entry point into Sellafield and the Tier 1 partners.

Degree apprenticeships (Level 6)

Mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, nuclear and systems engineering, plus project management and project controls. Delivered with the University of Cumbria, UCLan and Lancaster University alongside paid work.

Business and professional apprenticeships

Planning and estimating, procurement and supply chain, safety, health and environment, data and digital. Often overlooked and less competitive than the engineering intakes.

Where the apprenticeships are

Two programmes dominate. At Sellafield and across West Cumbria apprentices join the decommissioning mission and its Tier 1 partners, working out of Whitehaven, Egremont, Cleator Moor and Seascale. At BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness the submarine build programme runs one of the largest apprentice intakes in the North West. Beyond them, the nuclear supply chain — fabricators, contractors and consultancies — recruits smaller cohorts all year round.

Our career guide covers vetting, site access and safety training, and the salary guide shows what apprentices typically progress to once qualified.

Common questions

What GCSEs do I need for a nuclear apprenticeship in Cumbria?

Most Level 3 engineering apprenticeships ask for grade 4/C or above in maths, English and a science or technology subject. Degree apprenticeships normally add A levels or a BTEC extended diploma with maths.

When do applications open?

The large employers recruit on an annual cycle, with most vacancies advertised between autumn and early spring for a September start. Contractors and supply chain firms recruit throughout the year, which is why it is worth watching this page and setting an alert.

Do I need security clearance?

Apprentices need baseline personnel security standard (BPSS) checks and nuclear site security vetting before they get site access. Submarine work at Barrow can require SC clearance, which the employer sponsors.

Can I apply as an adult career changer?

Yes. There is no upper age limit on apprenticeships, and Cumbrian nuclear employers regularly take on adult apprentices moving from other trades or industries.
