Although the roles work towards the same objective—controlling exposure to ionising radiation—their responsibilities are different.

Radiation Protection Adviser

A Radiation Protection Adviser, or RPA, provides competent advice to employers on compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017. This is a specialist professional role rather than a straightforward entry-level position.

An RPA may advise on matters such as:

  • radiation risk assessments and control measures;
  • designation of controlled and supervised areas;
  • local rules and contingency arrangements;
  • dose restriction and investigation;

Health physics monitor

The work may involve:

  • contamination and radiation surveys;
  • checking workers, equipment and work areas;
  • using and function-checking monitoring instruments;

Health physics monitoring is usually the more accessible route for somebody starting a practical radiation protection career. Employers may recruit apprentices, trainees or people with relevant experience from nuclear operations, laboratories, defence, healthcare, environmental monitoring or other regulated industries.

Useful preparation includes:

  • vocational study in radiation protection, nuclear operations or laboratory work;
  • an apprenticeship or employer-led trainee programme;
  • practical training in contamination and dose-rate monitoring;
  • experience following permits, local rules and controlled-area procedures;
  • strong numeracy, record-keeping and communication skills;
  • an understanding of conventional workplace hazards.

Instrument competence must be demonstrated in practice. Knowing the theory is not enough: monitors need to select appropriate equipment, recognise limitations, avoid contaminating instruments and interpret readings correctly.

Site access requirements vary. Before applying, check whether the vacancy requires existing nuclear experience, security clearance, medical fitness, shift availability or particular vocational qualifications. Do not assume that a course alone guarantees entry to a licensed site.

How to become an RPS

The route to RPS normally starts with competence in the underlying job. For example, an engineering, laboratory or operations employee may be selected because they understand the task and can supervise compliance with local rules.

RPS training commonly covers radiation hazards, basic dose concepts, workplace controls, local rules, monitoring and action during abnormal events. However, an employer must decide whether the person is suitable for its particular work and formally define the appointment.

How to become a Radiation Protection Adviser

The RPA route generally suits graduates or experienced professionals with a strong grounding in radiation physics, radiological protection, engineering or another relevant scientific discipline.

Prospective RPAs normally need structured development covering legislation, radiation measurement, dosimetry, biological effects, shielding, source control, practical protection and emergency arrangements. They must also build evidence that they can apply this knowledge in real workplaces.

In practice, development often involves working under experienced radiation protection professionals, keeping a portfolio of evidence and obtaining recognised certification before acting as an RPA. Certification does not remove the employer’s responsibility to select an adviser whose expertise is appropriate to its hazards.

When comparing training providers, check:

  • whether the course supports recognised RPA competence requirements;
  • whether practical workplace evidence is required separately;
  • who assesses or certifies competence;
  • whether mentoring and portfolio support are included;
  • whether the training fits the sector in which you plan to work.

For monitoring and dose-control posts, look for wording covering controlled-area experience, monitoring equipment, contamination control, dosimetry, work planning and shift arrangements. RPA vacancies are more likely to request recognised professional competence, substantial practical experience and the ability to advise senior stakeholders.

Read essential and desirable criteria separately. If an advert asks for existing certification, do not describe an introductory course as equivalent. Conversely, relevant operational experience may support an application for a trainee position even if you have not held a radiation-specific job title.
