For candidates searching for nuclear NDT jobs UK, the main challenge is understanding which method, certification level and industrial experience employers expect.

What does a nuclear NDT technician do?

NDT technicians and inspectors look for surface or internal defects in welds, castings, forgings, pipework and engineered components. Depending on the role, the work can include preparing inspection areas, calibrating equipment, carrying out examinations, interpreting indications and producing traceable reports.

Nuclear and defence projects place particular emphasis on following approved procedures and maintaining accurate records. Technicians may work in fabrication shops, during construction, on operating sites or as part of maintenance and outage teams.

Job titles are not always consistent. Relevant vacancies may appear as:

UT, RT, MPI and DPI explained

Ultrasonic testing (UT)

UT introduces high-frequency sound into a component and analyses the returned signals. It is widely used to examine welds and detect internal discontinuities, and can also be used for thickness measurement.

Entry-level work may involve equipment checks, scanning to a written instruction and recording results under supervision. More advanced roles can require weld interpretation, procedure knowledge or specialist techniques such as phased-array ultrasonic testing.

Radiographic testing (RT)

RT uses ionising radiation to create an image of a component’s internal structure. It is commonly associated with weld inspection but brings additional safety, controlled-area and regulatory responsibilities.

Candidates normally need method certification plus the radiation-safety training required for their duties. Vacancy details should explain whether the work involves film, digital radiography, site radiography or image interpretation. Do not assume an RT certificate alone covers every employer’s radiation-protection requirements.

Magnetic particle inspection (MPI)

MPI detects surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. It is often used on welds, machined parts and other steel components.

The method is relatively accessible for candidates moving from welding, fabrication or mechanical inspection. However, technicians still need to understand surface preparation, magnetisation techniques, consumables, lighting conditions and acceptance criteria.

Dye penetrant inspection (DPI)

DPI, also called liquid penetrant testing, identifies surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials. The process normally involves cleaning, applying penetrant, removing excess material, applying developer and inspecting the resulting indications.

DPI can be used on both ferrous and non-ferrous components. As with MPI, reliable results depend on careful process control rather than simply applying the consumables.

Which qualifications do employers request?

UK vacancies commonly refer to certification under recognised NDT schemes such as PCN, which is based on ISO 9712. Some employers or international supply-chain organisations use employer-based certification arrangements instead. Check the vacancy carefully because certificates are method-, level- and sector-specific.

The usual progression is:

  • Level 1: performs defined tests to written instructions under appropriate supervision.
  • Level 2: selects techniques within the approved scope, sets up equipment, performs tests and interprets results against applicable standards.
  • Level 3: takes higher-level responsibility for procedures, techniques, interpretation and technical oversight.

Holding Level 2 in one method does not automatically qualify someone in another. A UT certificate also needs the appropriate sector or product coverage for the work being undertaken.

Employers may additionally ask for:

  • An engineering, welding, fabrication or mechanical apprenticeship
  • Evidence of supervised training and logged experience
  • Eyesight testing that meets the certification scheme’s requirements
  • Welding-inspection qualifications for combined roles
  • Knowledge of drawings, weld symbols and inspection plans
  • Experience producing auditable quality records
  • Eligibility for site access or security vetting

Before paying for a course, confirm the exact method, level and product sector used by your target employers. Training, examinations, industrial experience and final certification may be separate stages.

Routes into nuclear NDT

An apprenticeship or technician role is usually the strongest route for someone without inspection experience. Fabricators, welders, machinists and maintenance technicians can also move across because they already understand materials, manufacturing processes and workshop controls.

A practical route might be:

  1. Build a foundation in engineering, fabrication, welding or quality control.
  2. Choose a method relevant to local employers and component types.
  3. Complete approved training and examinations.
  4. Accumulate documented experience under qualified supervision.
  5. Gain the required certification and maintain its validity.
  6. Develop nuclear or defence experience through quality, inspection or manufacturing work.

Career changers should avoid collecting several basic certificates without a plan for gaining supervised experience. Ask training providers what experience is required, who can validate it and whether their course leads directly to certification.
