Nuclear graduate schemes can lead into engineering, project delivery, safety, quality, commercial or digital careers. The challenge is comparing programmes whose job titles, entry requirements and application timetables differ. A structured shortlist will help you focus on roles that fit your degree, preferred location and long-term goals.
Start with the career pathway
Do not compare schemes by employer name alone. Begin by identifying the work you want to learn and the professional direction it could support.
Engineering
Engineering pathways may cover mechanical, electrical, electronic, control and instrumentation, civil, structural, chemical, process or systems disciplines. Some programmes recruit for a specific team; others include placements across several functions.
Check:
- which degree subjects are accepted;
- whether an integrated master’s or accredited degree is preferred;
- whether the work is design, maintenance, operations or technical consultancy;
- the balance between office, laboratory, workshop and site work;

Nuclear safety and quality
Safety pathways may involve safety cases, hazard assessment, criticality, radiological protection, human factors or regulatory compliance. Quality roles can cover assurance, inspection, auditing and the control of technical records.
These jobs require clear technical writing, careful reasoning and confidence in challenging evidence. Establish whether a scheme recruits directly into safety or expects graduates to move into it after gaining engineering or operational experience.
Digital, data and systems
Digital programmes can include software engineering, cyber security, data analysis, modelling, automation, information management and systems engineering. In nuclear and defence environments, the work may involve sensitive systems and controlled information.
Compare the programming languages, analytical tools or technical methods mentioned in each advert. A computer science degree may be relevant, but some employers also consider mathematics, physics and engineering graduates with suitable digital skills.
Compare advertised entry requirements
Create a table or spreadsheet rather than relying on memory. For each scheme, record the exact wording used for:
- accepted degree subjects and minimum classification;
