Nuclear CAD Designer Jobs: Skills and Career Routes

Published 11 September 2026 · Cumbria Works editorial

Understand nuclear CAD designer jobs, including software, configuration control, qualifications, salaries and routes into design work.

Nuclear CAD designer jobs sit between engineering intent and the controlled drawings or models used to manufacture, install, operate and maintain complex assets. Job titles are not consistent, however: a CAD technician, draughtsperson, designer and design engineer may use similar software while carrying very different responsibilities.

CAD technician, draughtsperson or design engineer?

Always judge a vacancy by its duties and required competence rather than its title alone.

CAD technicians generally create and update drawings or models from engineers’ instructions, survey information and established design standards. Work may include layouts, sections, details, schedules and drawing registers. The role can also involve converting legacy information into current CAD formats.

Draughtsperson vacancies often cover similar ground. The term is still used for detailed production drawings, fabrication information and equipment arrangements. Some employers use “draughtsperson” for a skilled discipline specialist rather than an entry-level operator.

Designers usually have greater ownership of design development. They may resolve interfaces, select standard details, carry out site surveys, contribute to design reviews and coordinate models across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical or control systems disciplines. Senior and principal designers may also check other people’s work and lead packages.

Design engineers are normally accountable for engineering decisions as well as their representation in CAD. Depending on the discipline, this can include calculations, specifications, substantiation, requirements management and confirmation that the design meets relevant standards. CAD may be only one part of the job.

Before applying, ask:

  • Are you producing drawings from marked-up information or developing the design?
  • Will you undertake calculations or approve engineering decisions?
  • Does the post include checking, verification or technical-authority duties?
  • Is it focused on 2D drawings, 3D models or both?
  • Which discipline and lifecycle stage does it cover?

Software named in CAD vacancies

Software requirements vary by employer, discipline and project. Nuclear and defence vacancies may ask for experience with packages such as AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, Plant 3D, Inventor, SolidWorks, CATIA, AVEVA E3D or PDMS, and Navisworks. Do not assume that experience in one package automatically meets a requirement for another.

Read the advert for the exact product, version and expected capability. “AutoCAD experience”, for example, could mean basic 2D amendments or the independent production of controlled construction drawings. A 3D role could involve component modelling, plant layout, clash detection, data attributes or model administration.

Useful evidence for an application includes:

  • The software used and whether your work was 2D or 3D.
  • Your engineering discipline and the assets modelled.
  • Whether you created, checked or approved deliverables.
  • Experience coordinating with other disciplines.
  • Work produced for manufacture, installation or as-built records.
  • Any model, drawing or CAD standards you followed.

A portfolio can help where security and intellectual-property restrictions permit. Never include controlled, sensitive or employer-owned material. An anonymised description of the problem, your responsibility and the resulting deliverable is often safer.

Why configuration control matters

Strong CAD ability is not enough in a highly controlled engineering environment. Employers need confidence that drawings and models remain traceable throughout design changes, construction and operation.

Configuration-control knowledge can include:

  • Drawing numbers, revision codes and document status.
  • Formal review, checking and approval workflows.
  • Design-change requests and impact assessment.
  • Baselines and the identification of the current approved design.
  • Recording comments and closing review actions.
  • Managing master models, references and linked files.
  • Issuing documents through an approved document-management system.
  • Incorporating site changes into as-built records.

Candidates moving from general manufacturing, construction or infrastructure should translate comparable experience clearly. Controlled revisions, engineering change notices, inspection records and release-to-manufacture processes can all demonstrate relevant working habits, even if the terminology differs.

Qualifications and routes into the work

There is no single route into nuclear CAD work. Entry-level technician and draughting roles may accept an apprenticeship, a Level 3 technical qualification or demonstrable CAD experience. HNC or HND study can support progression into designer and engineering positions.

Degree-level qualifications are more commonly requested where a design engineer must perform analysis, calculations or engineering substantiation. Experience may sometimes provide an alternative route, but candidates should check the essential criteria rather than assume equivalence.

Common career routes include:

  • An engineering design or draughting apprenticeship followed by discipline experience.
  • Moving from fabrication, machining or installation into detailed design.
  • Progressing from CAD technician to designer, checker and senior designer.
  • Using an HNC, HND or degree to move towards design engineering.
  • Transferring from construction, rail, energy, marine or advanced manufacturing.

Site knowledge can be particularly valuable. A technician or craftsperson who understands access, tolerances, installation sequencing and maintainability may bring practical insight to a design team.

Relevant roles currently advertised

The current listings illustrate why title and salary comparisons require care. A Principal CS&A Designer vacancy in Whitehaven is displayed at £29,889.59, while a Senior Designer – Civil & Structures role in Cumbria is advertised at £85,280–£93,600.

Related engineering vacancies include a Civil Structural Engineer in Whitehaven at £24,269.77 and a Principal CS&A Engineer in Cumbria at £116,480–£126,880. These are not like-for-like salary benchmarks: seniority, responsibilities, hours, contract type and the way pay has been presented may differ. Check the full advert and confirm the basis of any displayed figure with the recruiter.

The listings also include mechanical, EC&I, systems architecture modelling and project engineering roles around Sellafield, Whitehaven, Moor Row and Barrow-in-Furness. These can be relevant searches for experienced designers whose job title does not contain “CAD”.

Advice for hiring managers

A precise title improves applications. State whether the employee will draught, design, calculate, check or approve, and distinguish essential software from packages that can be learned after appointment.

The advert should also explain the discipline, expected deliverables, 2D or 3D emphasis, configuration responsibilities and required qualification level. Where clearance or site access applies, describe the process accurately without implying that every candidate must already hold clearance.
