Where mechanical skills fit

Mechanical engineering in the nuclear sector covers more than equipment design. Engineers and technicians support construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, modification and eventual decommissioning.

These vacancies are not all necessarily nuclear roles. They do, however, show the range of transferable mechanical capability available across Cumbria’s nuclear, defence, manufacturing and maintenance labour market.

How your specialism transfers

For pipework and pressure systems, emphasise the systems and materials you have worked with rather than relying on a job title alone. Useful evidence includes installation, pressure testing, flange management, valve maintenance, leak investigation, pipe supports and work completed to approved drawings or procedures.

For HVAC, explain whether your experience covers building services, industrial ventilation or safety-related plant. Include fans, dampers, ductwork, filtration, balancing, inspection and maintenance where relevant. Do not claim nuclear ventilation experience if your background is commercial or industrial; explain the transferable principles instead.

For rotating equipment, identify the assets you know and the work you personally performed. Alignment, vibration monitoring, lubrication, seal replacement, bearing inspection and root-cause analysis are more informative than saying you maintained “general plant”.

For maintenance, show that you can plan and execute work safely. Examples might cover isolations, permits, task risk controls, maintenance instructions, defect reporting, spares, shift handovers and accurate completion records.

Qualifications and requirements to check

The supplied vacancy data contains titles, employers, locations and advertised salaries, but not the complete person specifications. Candidates should therefore open each full advert before applying and check:

  • Whether the role requires an apprenticeship, NVQ, HNC, HND or engineering degree.
  • Whether professional registration or progress towards it is requested.
  • Which mechanical systems, plant types or engineering standards are named.
  • Whether the position is design, construction, commissioning or maintenance focused.
  • Requirements for shifts, site attendance, travel or work in controlled areas.
  • Whether security vetting, medical assessment or drug and alcohol testing applies.
  • Whether the salary is accompanied by overtime, shift allowance, pension or other benefits.

Never assume that previous nuclear experience is essential unless the advert says so. Equally, do not assume that experience in another regulated sector will automatically satisfy the employer. Match your evidence against the stated criteria.

Building a stronger application

Start your CV with a short mechanical profile identifying your discipline, level and principal plant experience. Follow it with specific achievements and responsibilities.

A strong entry might state that you diagnosed a pump fault, completed an approved repair and documented the return to service. A weak entry would simply say that you were “responsible for maintenance”.

Include relevant evidence such as:

  • Plant and systems maintained or designed.
  • Drawings, specifications and maintenance documentation used.
  • Safety, quality and configuration controls followed.
  • Interfaces with operations, electrical, EC&I, civil and project teams.
  • Supervisory responsibility or contractor coordination.
  • Improvements to reliability, maintainability or work delivery, where you can substantiate them.

Career changers should translate experience from power generation, process manufacturing, utilities, marine engineering, building services, rail or heavy industry into nuclear-relevant language without overstating it.
