  • MMA or stick welding: often used for structural, repair and site work because the equipment is relatively portable.
  • MIG/MAG: widely used for productive workshop fabrication in carbon steel and other materials, depending on the wire and shielding gas.
  • TIG: associated with controlled, high-quality work on materials such as stainless steel, aluminium and specialist alloys.
  • Flux-cored arc welding: used where productivity, positional work or thicker fabrication is important.
  • Submerged arc welding: generally associated with mechanised welding of longer seams and heavier sections.

Some roles require more than one process, such as TIG root welding followed by MMA fill and cap runs. Do not claim a process simply because you used it during training. Separate current, production-level experience from introductory exposure.

Which coding standards may appear?

UK vacancies can refer to welder qualification standards including BS EN ISO 9606, with the relevant part depending on the material. Employers working to an American code may refer to ASME Section IX. Structural fabrication can also involve requirements connected with BS EN 1090 and an employer’s approved welding procedures.

These references are not interchangeable. Check whether the vacancy asks for:

  • A current welder qualification certificate
  • Experience working to a welding procedure specification (WPS)
  • A particular material group or product form
  • Pipe or plate approval
  • A specified welding position
  • An employer trade test before starting

Also check who issued the certificate and how continuity has been maintained. Even where you hold a relevant qualification, a contractor may require a fresh test against its own procedure.

Site credentials and controlled environments

Workshop ability is only part of the picture for site-based work. Confined-space, working-at-height, abrasive-wheel, lifting or respiratory-protection training can also be relevant where the duties require it.

  • Material certificates and consumable control
  • Preheat and interpass-temperature requirements

  • Non-destructive testing hold points
  • Clean working practices and foreign-material exclusion
  • Recording defects, repairs and deviations correctly

Fabrication experience that strengthens an application

A strong coded-welder CV explains what you have built, not just where you worked. Describe relevant products such as pipework, pressure equipment, structural steel, tanks, supports, modules or sheet-metal assemblies only where they reflect your actual experience.

Show your ability to work from engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, weld symbols and bills of materials. Include preparation skills such as cutting, bevelling, grinding, fitting, tacking and distortion control. If you have used positional welding, purging, preheating or mechanised equipment, state the context.

Quality matters as much as speed in regulated sectors. Give factual examples of working to a WPS, maintaining traceability and presenting work for inspection. Avoid unsupported claims such as “zero defects”; explain the procedures and checks you followed instead.
